Harmony Festival is Jan de Haan’s expression of his great respect for the composer of composers, Johann Sebastian Bach. He has used the four note names which form the name of this composer as the basis of this piece. This four note motif provides us with the most beautiful and unexpected chord combinations creating a ‘festival of harmonies’!

Dedicated to the North American Brass Band Association, this is music that is full of energy and dynamic extremes. In form it draws from the overture style, although the themes are self-existing and the piece is programmatic. Working well asa festival opener, it sets a mood of excitement. Following the rhythmic fanfares of the opening, the first theme is presented in the cornets followed by a return to the same rhythmic material. A second theme appears in the horn section and isdeveloped, changing into a darker and sinister form of the same motif. Eventually a Maestoso section is reached, full of sustained block chords in the cornets and trombones, as the rest of the band counters with cascading lines that weavestraight through the brighter instruments.

Christmas as celebrated in England is a relatively newtradition dating from the time of Queen Victoria. Herhusband Prince Albert was from Germany and he broughtmany German Christmas traditions with him, including theChristmas tree and Christmascards, and even carols such asHark, the Herald Angels Sing. Philip Sparke has however useda varied selection of English melodies to arrange into his?Festival of Carols?.The choir parts are seperately available (order no. AMP 227-050). : AMP 227-050).

The hymn tune Rhosymedre is the work of the nineteenth-century Anglican priest John David Edwards, who named it after the village of Rhosymedre in North Wales, where he served as the vicar for 43 years until his death in 1885. Vaughan Williams's organ prelude has been arranged for many different instrumental groups, including orchestra, string quartet and brass quintet, but not until now for brass band. This arrangement was prepared in 2008 to mark the 50th anniversary of the composer's death and was first performed by the Royal Northern College of Music Brass Band at the 2008 RNCM Festival of Brass, conducted by Christopher Houlding.

This work was commissioned by Eurofestival. Ever since antiquity, mankind has been fascinated by the lion: symbolising courage, strength and temperance. Many have made use of the lion to represent themselves in symbols and emblems. In five movements the composer describes both the history of the lion throughout centuries, as well as the characteristics. A challenging idea to turn into music! The final movement ‘King of Kings’ is extremely spectacular. A great choice for thematic concerts or as a main piece in your concert or contest. Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century, lyrics had been added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used three contrastingtraditional tunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert.

Even the most basic understanding of Western music must include an intimate familiarity with the magnificent body of works by J.S.Bach. The charming beauty of the ARIOSO from BWV 156 must almost certainly appear on anyone?s personal list of the world's most beautiful melodies. What a wonderful vehicle for the study of artful phrasing and expression! Everyone will instantly recognise this great patriotic hymn that is often thought of as the second English national anthem. This brass band arrangement by Philip Sparke is sure to be used over and over again at your band’s performances. Your audience will not be able to help themselves from joining in with this rousing song everytime you use it as the final item in any concert. Sir Hubert Parry (1848-1918) set William Blake’s Preface to Milton to music for a rally of the ‘Fight for the Right’ movement in the Queen’s Hall, London, in 1916. It became more generally known as ‘Jerusalem’ when Parry conducted it in 1918 at a concert to mark the final stage in the Votes for Women Campaign, after which it was adopted by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (and is still sung at meetings of WI Groups all over Britain). Sir Edward Elgar added his orchestral accompaniment in time for the Leeds Festival of 1922, since then it has become a popular national hymn. The theme is uniquely English and there is an undertone of 19th century politics. Thisarrangement by Philip Sparke is sure to be used over and over again at your band’s performances.

A Tale as Yet Untold was commissioned by the Cory Band for the European Brass Band Championships in Linz, Austria, 2010, and their winning performance gave them a hattrick of victories at the competition. The theme of this impressive work, which is set in three movements, is one that recurs again and again throughout the music of Philip Sparke, the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity and how the beauty of music can help in this respect.
